BCBS accuses Tennessee hospital of using 'suspicious' billing tactics

A small hospital in Tennessee submitted "suspicious" claims to BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee to collect improper payments, the health insurer alleged in a news release shared with the Tennessean.

BCBS of Tennessee claimed that since mid-2018, it overpaid Perry Community Hospital in Linden $4.5 million due to questionable billing practices discovered by an audit later the same year. In one instance, BCBS of Tennessee accused Perry Community of filing claims for lab tests for people who were never hospital patients.

Perry Community did not immediately respond to the Tennessean's request for comment.

Because BCBS of Tennessee claims it was never repaid for the overpayments, the health insurer said it filed a demand for arbitration to recover $4.5 million.
