Anthem in the headlines: 7 recent stories

From an approved rebranding to the acquisition of a managed care company, here are seven recent headlines involving Anthem: 

1. Anthem shareholders voted at their annual meeting May 18 to change the company's name to Elevance Health. The company will commemorate the rebranding on June 28 by ringing the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange and will begin trading under the ticker symbol ELV.

2. Lawyers for Anthem and Atlanta-based Northside Hospital system appeared before the Georgia Supreme Court May 17 regarding their ongoing contract dispute. The dispute began in 2021 when Anthem notified Northside it wanted to change its contract, alleging that Northside charged more than most metro hospitals. Northside said the contract was not up for renewal and argued a Georgia bill signed into law during the pandemic prohibited payers from terminating a provider's in-network coverage for up to 150 days after a public health emergency.

3. Anthem had the third-highest net income among payers in the first quarter of 2022. 

4. Anthem completed the acquisition of  Lake Success, N.Y.-based managed care company  Integra Managed Care, according to a May 5 company news release. The deal was first announced in November and closed a few months earlier than expected.

5. Portland, Maine-based Fore River Urology is terminating its contract with Anthem, Maine Public Radio reported May 2. Beginning Aug. 1, the independent medical practice will no longer be an in-network provider for patients with commercial Anthem plans, according to the report. Anthem Medicare Advantage patients will no longer be in network starting Sept. 1. 

6. Anthem President and CEO Gail Boudreaux's 2021 total compensation package was $19,348,241. That's a 13.1 percent increase from 2020 ($17,109,952).

7. Anthem's operating revenue grew by 18 percent, and the company added over 3 million members from the prior-year quarter, according to its first-quarter 2022 earnings report released April 20.
