Anthem completes acquisition of palliative care provider Aspire Health: 3 things to know

Anthem closed its acquisition of the nation's largest provider of palliative care services for an undisclosed amount.

Here are three things to know about the deal:

1. The acquisition, announced in May, gives Anthem reins over the non-hospice, community-based palliative care provider, which operates in 25 states and contracts with over 20 health plans. The company was founded by former U.S. Sen. Bill Frist, MD, and Brad Smith, who is now CEO of Aspire.

2. Gail K. Boudreaux, president and CEO of Anthem, said in a statement, "With the addition of Aspire, we are able to expand our capabilities and serve a broader set of consumers in the home and other settings outside of the hospital."

3. Aspire Health will operate as a wholly owned subsidiary of Anthem. Aspire Health's associates will join Anthem's diversified business group.
