Anthem acquires America's 1st Choice: 5 things to know

Anthem completed its acquisition of America's 1st Choice, a privately held for-profit Medicare Advantage plan in Florida.

Here are four things to know about the transaction, which closed Feb. 15.

1. Anthem announced its deal with America's 1st Choice Oct. 24, roughly a month after inking a deal to acquire HealthSun, a Medicare Advantage health insurance company also serving beneficiaries in Florida. Anthem's HealthSun deal closed Dec. 21.

2. Under its America's 1st Choice deal, Anthem will acquire Florida-based Freedom Health and Optimum brands, which provide health maintenance organization plans like chronic special needs plans and dual-eligible special needs plans to beneficiaries. America's 1st Choice also operates America's 1st Choice of South Carolina, which Anthem will acquire.

3. America's 1st Choice plans cover about 130,000 Medicare members across 25 counties in Florida and three counties in South Carolina. America's 1st Choice will operate as a wholly owned subsidiary of Anthem.

4. Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

5. After adding America's 1st Choice members to its portfolio, Anthem's Medicare and Medicaid businesses now cover 780,000-plus individuals in Florida.
