Amazon could make a big play in the health insurance industry next year, according to CNBC.
Stephen Buck, co-founder of health transparency company Courage Health, told CNBC that Amazon's recent healthcare deals signal the company could make a bold move into health insurance in 2019.
"In my opinion, the puzzle is far from complete," he told the publication. "2019 could be the year that Amazon adds a few more big pieces to reveal much larger ambitions in healthcare by becoming an insurer, pharmacy benefits manager, or both."
In 2018, Amazon made several indications it's eyeing business opportunities in healthcare. The e-commerce giant acquired internet pharmacy company PillPack, formed an employer health venture with JPMorgan Chase & Co and Berkshire Hathaway, and discounted Prime membership for Medicaid beneficiaries.
Mr. Buck added as pharmacy benefit managers like CVS Health and Express Scripts integrate with insurers, Amazon may be forced to offer its own care model. It could test the system on its employees before expanding to large employers, according to the report.
