AHIP weighs in on 2023 Medicare Advantage star ratings

America's Health Insurance Plans President and CEO Matt Eyles said his organization and member plans are reviewing the latest Medicare Advantage star ratings to "assess impacts."

CMS released the 2023 star ratings Oct. 6. The average star rating for Medicare Advantage plans decreased to 4.15, down from 4.37 in 2022. The decrease comes after CMS implemented methodology changes in the way contracts are rated and ended most pandemic-era provisions.

Mr. Eyles said in an Oct. 6 news release that despite the decrease, the "majority of Medicare Advantage enrollees are projected to be covered by high performing plans."

"Medicare Advantage is a prime example of the government and free market working together to deliver lower costs, more choices and better outcomes for the American people," Mr. Eyles said. "AHIP will continue to work with the administration, Congress, and other stakeholders to ensure Medicare Advantage remains strong and vibrant for the millions of Americans who depend on it for good health."
