Aetna CEO offers no word on headquarters staying in Connecticut

Despite questions revolving around the future location of its headquarters, Hartford, Conn.-based Aetna has remained fairly quiet about plans to potentially move its home base, according to the Hartford Courant.

At its annual meeting, Aetna CEO Mark Bertolini said that as part of its merger with Humana, Aetna is required to create a presence in Kentucky, where Humana is headquartered. "We had to get that commitment in order to get the merger done," Mr. Bertolini said, according to the report. "Having said that, the rest of our real estate is under review."

But queries about a potential move for Aetna have been surfacing for weeks. In April, there were various reports claiming Boston and other cities had approached Aetna about a headquarters location change.

Regardless, Mr. Bertolini is keeping mum on Aetna's plans. Instead, during its annual meeting last week, he focused on the merger with Humana. He added that "until further notice [Aetna's] corporate headquarters is in Hartford," according to the report.

Additionally, he said Aetna's workforce in Connecticut has dropped "pretty substantially" over the years. It currently employs 6,000 workers in Connecticut, down from 6,700 in 2012.
