Anthem 'optimistic' it can close deal with Maine hospital before new year

Anthem said it is optimistic that progress is being made on contract negotiations with Portland-based Maine Medical Center and the sides will reach an agreement by the end of the year, the Portland Press Herald reported Aug. 1.

Maine Medical Center said in April it will leave Anthem's provider network in January. The medical center's parent company, MaineHealth, said Anthem owes the provider more than $70 million in unpaid claims from the last three years.

Anthem has accused the provider of overcharging, particularly for medications, according to the report.

"We are optimistic that we are making progress on coming to an agreement that protects the Maine consumer and keeps Maine Medical Center in our care provider network beyond Dec. 31, 2022," Anthem told the publication.

A MaineHealth spokesperson said there are still "many details to work through in order to reach an agreement."
